What Is ONTARGET^®?

ONTARGET^® and the parallel TRANSCEND^® trial are studies within The ONTARGET^® Trial Programme – a landmark clinical investigation in cardiovascular protection.

The ONTARGET^® Trial Programme is the largest cardiovascular clinical investigation ever undertaken with an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), enrolling 31,456 patients at high cardiovascular risk from 40 countries and providing more than 150,000 patient-years of data.^1-7

ONTARGET^® includes the broadest cross-section of patients with high-risk cardiovascular disorders ever studied in this particular clinical trial setting.

The aims of the ONTARGET^® trial are to determine:

• Whether telmisartan combined with ramipril reduces cardiovascular mortality and morbidity even further than the ACE inhibitor alone in patients over 55 years of age who are at high cardiovascular risk.
• The possible cardiovascular protective effects of telmisartan alone and of ramipril alone.
• Whether the potential cardiovascular protection provided by telmisartan and/or ramipril is independent of their proven effects on blood pressure.

ONTARGET^® will help to answer several important clinical questions:

• Do the different mechanisms of ARBs and ACE inhibitors translate to different clinical effects?
• Would dual therapy provide additional benefit, especially in terms of cardiovascular protection?
• Which ARB could match the cardiovascular benefits shown in HOPE and explain the additional benefits of dual RAS blockade in cardiovascular protection?
