SMOOTH
Study of MICARDIS® (telmisartan) in Overweight/Obese patients with Type 2 diabetes and Hypertension
SMOOTH is the largest ambulatory blood pressure monitoring study to evaluate the efficacy of antihypertensive treatment in diabetic and obese patients
Why conduct this study?
Obesity is common in western societies. In Europe, almost 280,000 deaths are related to inhabitants being overweight or obese.1 Diabetes, hypertension, and obesity frequently occur together and are part of the metabolic syndrome, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) events.2
Hypertension in people with both diabetes and obesity is difficult to treat. Most patients are likely to need vigorous treatment to achieve good blood pressure control.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are potential treatment options for these patients:3,4
- They are effective antihypertensive treatments and are virtually devoid of unwanted metabolic side effects
- They could potentially reduce new-onset diabetes risk by renin–angiotensin–aldosterone blockade on glucose metabolism
- ARBs are already recommended by current guidelines for treating patients with diabetes and target-organ damage
The highest risk for CV complications occurs in the early morning hours. MICARDISPLUS® a formulation containing telmisartan plus the thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is expected to offer better protection and blood pressure control than a short-acting ARB in combination.
The aim of the SMOOTH study was to compare the effects of MICARDIS® against valsartan in a fixed-dose combination with a thiazide-type diuretic (HCTZ) in obese patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.5
