VIVALDI
A trial to inVestigate the efficacy of telmIsartan 80 mg versus VALsartan 160 mg in hypertensive Type 2 DIabetic patients with overt nephropathy
VIVALDI compared the effects of MICARDIS® and valsartan on proteinuria in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension
Why conduct this study?
Patients with diabetes and hypertension are at significant risk of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and ARBs are established renoprotective agents.1-5 The MARVAL (MicroAlbuminuria Reduction with VALsartan) study compared the renoprotective effects of the ARB valsartan with amlodipine in patients with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria.4 Valsartan was associated with a significantly greater reduction in the urinary albumin excretion rate from baseline when compared with amlodipine.
ARBs are recommended as first-line treatments for patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy. However, head-to-head comparisons between ARBs in patients with diabetes are limited.
The aim of the VIVALDI study was to compare, for the first time, the effect of MICARDIS® and valsartan on proteinuria – one of the most important disease severity markers in diabetic nephropathy – in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.6,7
