Study Population

Inclusion Criteria

• Type 2 diabetes (glycosylated haemoglobin < 12%)
• Mild-to-moderate hypertension (seated systolic blood pressure (SBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP ≥ 180/95 mmHg after ≥ 3 months’ ACE inhibitor therapy)
• Urinary albumin excretion rate 11–999 µg/min at baseline
• Normal serum creatinine (≤140 µmol/L [1.6 mg/dL])
• Normal GFR >70 mL/min/ 1.73 m²
• Normal renal ultrasound

Exclusion Criteria

• Serum alanine and/or aspartate aminotransferase >2 × upper limit of normal
• Renal dysfunction not due to diabetic nephropathy
• Single kidney or known renal artery stenosis
• Congestive heart failure (CHF, New York Heart Association Class II–IV)
• Allergy to study drug, contrast media or iodine
