Demography/medical history

  • Baseline demographic characteristics and medical history of the patients in the TRANSCEND® study were generally comparable with those of patients in the HOPE trial – reflecting a study population who are at high risk of a cardiovascular event but with their blood pressure in the ‘normal’ range.1-4
  • However, patients in the TRANSCEND® trial demonstrated greater ethnic diversity, were slightly older and had greater frequencies of hypertension and cardiovascular disease than those who participated in the HOPE study.1-4

Medications

  • Use of beta-blockers or lipid-lowering therapy was higher in TRANSCEND® than in HOPE.1-4
  • Almost 60% of the TRANSCEND® population had already received ACE inhibitors, whereas in HOPE use of ACE inhibitors was negligible.1-4
  • A high proportion of the study population was receiving drugs that can also lower blood pressure – a significant proportion of these were for secondary prevention rather than blood pressure control.1-4
