Estimating a patient's global cardiovascular risk helps to guide to an optimal patient and disease management. Using the 'Cardiovascular Risk and Reduction Calculator', the individual cardiovascular risk of a patient can be interactively assessed and evidence-based information about the specific medical case will be provided. The following common scores were applied to identify the cardiovascular risk:

PROCAM – Assessment of the 10-year risk of acute coronary events evaluated by evaluating level of triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, smoking status and family history of myocardial infarction in correlation to the patient's age.

Framingham – Estimation of the risk for "hard CHD" which includes myocardial infarction and coronary death. To estimate the specific risk for your patient, add up to points for age, total cholesterol, HDl cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and smoker and then insert the points into the CHD risk table.

SCORE – Estimation of ten-year risk of fatal cardiovascular disease in Europe. To estimate the specific risk for your patient, age, smoking status, and the person’s systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol are required. The low risk chart is to be used for Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal. For all other European countries the high risk chart is to be used and used as the background of the calculator.

DRS – Prediction of the 10-years risk for drug-treated type 2 diabetes. According to the age, BMI, waist circumference and questions about the usage of blood pressure medictaion, history of high blood glucose, physical activity per week and daily fruit consumption, respectively the risk is computed to develop drug-treated type 2 diabetes.

IRIS II – Prognosis of overall vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes by identifying insulin restistance which is associated with increased risk of vascular complications in type 2 diabetes. The IRIS II score is a clinical composite measurement using BMI, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol.

How to use the 'Cardiovascular Risk and Reduction Calculator':

  • Select one of the preset patient profiles by clicking on the particular buttons and see the respective risk profiles, or
  • Choose "My patient's profile“ and complete the list of mandatory parameters to calculate your patients CV risk and risk to develop type 2 diabetes, respectively or the risk to develop CV complications in patients who have type 2 diabetes. Please note, all parameters that are relevant for the used scores must be entered in this case.

Please note, CV risk scores are not applicable for patients who were diagnosed with CHD or myocardial infarction/stroke. These patients are at highest risk for any cardiovascular events.
