The efficacy and tolerability of MICARDIS® for the treatment of hypertension has been extensively studied in a comprehensive clinical trials programme, including 24 clinical trials in patients with essential hypertension conducted in the USA, Canada and Europe.

In addition to placebo-controlled trials, MICARDIS® has been directly compared to active comparators, such as the ACE inhibitors enalapril and lisinopril, the ARBs losartan and valsartan, the beta-blocker atenolol, and the calcium channel blocker amlodipine. The results of these trials have established that MICARDIS® achieves blood pressure lowering at least as effectively as these other antihypertensive medications.

The PROTECTION Programme1 included five trials that were specifically designed to investigate the antihypertensive effects of MICARDIS® to protect against the early-morning blood pressure surge and in high-risk populations. A list of these important trials is provided below, but more information can be found in the Clinical Research section of this website.

  • PRISMA I & II Prospective, Randomised Investigation of the Safety and efficacy of MICARDIS® versus Ramipril using ABPM sister studies conducted in Europe and South Africa (PRISMA I) and in the USA and Canada (PRISMA II).2,3
  • SMOOTH Study of MICARDIS® On Obese/Overweight Type-2 diabetics with Hypertension.4
  • ATHOSA comparison of Telmisartan plus hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) with amlodipine plus HCTZ in Older patients with predominantly Systolic hypertension.5
  • ARBs-FDC – Blood pressure control with ARBs in Fixed Dose Combinations: telmisartan versus losartan.6

MICARDIS® trials have all used ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, which is widely considered to be the most relevant measure of blood pressure. 7,8
