Efficacy of MICARDISPLUS® 80/25
Once daily MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 has been proven effective in many hypertensive patients inadequately controlled on antihypertensive monotherapy, and to offer superior blood pressure control compared to other ARB/HCTZ combinations.1-5 However, BP targets may still not be achieved with MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 in difficult to manage hypertension. Recent studies1,6 have shown that a higher dose combination of telmisartan 80mg plus HCTZ 25mg (MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 ) provides significant additional reductions in systolic and diastolic BP compared with MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5.
In a trial involving over 1,000 hypertensive patients inadequately controlled on up to 3 antihypertensive agents, and randomised to receive either MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 or MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 (double-blind) for 8 weeks, MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 reduced SBP by an additional 38%, and DSP by a further 29% versus MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 alone 6. In a 24 week extension to this trial, 71.4% of patients taking MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 reached DBP<90mmHg, compared to 52.4% at baseline.7
Recent data suggest that using this higher dose of 25mg HCTZ in combination with telmisartan 80mg is even more effective than a similar combination with valsartan at lowering blood pressure. In a study of over 1000 patients with hypertension, MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 significantly lowered blood pressure by –24.0/–17.6 mmHg as compared with a reduction of –21.2/–16.1 mmHg with valsartan 160 mg plus 25 mg HCTZ (p=0.004 for systolic and p=0.019 for diastolic blood pressure).8,9
The superior BP control offered by MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 has been further confirmed in a 26-week dosage titration study in involving 278 hypertensive patients aged 65 years and over which compared MICARDIS PLUS® 80/25 with enalapril 20mg/HCTZ 25mg and found MICARDISPLUS® 80/25 to be more effective in controlling BP in this, often difficult to treat, age group.9
