Efficacy of MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5
Telmisartan, when combined with the thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5, provides improved blood pressure control beyond that observed with either monotherapy alone.1,2
Furthermore, data from two independent studies shows that MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5provides superior reduction in systolic blood pressure over 24 hours than losartan in combination with hydrochlorothiazide.3,4 MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5was also significantly superior to losartan/hydrochlorothiazide in the mean change from baseline in systolic blood pressure in the last 6 hours of the dosing interval – demonstrating superior 24-hour efficacy.
MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 has also been proven to be significantly more effective in controlling ambulatory blood pressure than olmesartan in combination with hydrochorthiazide (20mg/12.5mg) in adults with moderate hypertension.5
In the ATHOS study, MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 also produced beneficial effect on isolated systolic hypertension in elderly patients (≥ 60 years) compared with amlodipine in combination with HCTZ.6 Significantly more elderly patients had their 24-hour systolic blood pressure controlled (defined as <140 mmHg at week 14) with MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 than with amlodipine in combination with HCTZ.
A further study comparing MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 with lisinopril in combination with HCTZ (20mg/12.5mg) among elderly hypertensive patients (≥ 60 years) confirmed the superior efficacy of MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 in this population. Mean 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) was significantly lower at 24 weeks in the MICARDISPLUS® 80/12.5 treated patients.7
Further recent findings show greater blood-pressure benefits of MICARDIS® (80 mg) over valsartan (160 mg) when used in combination with HCTZ in high-risk overweight or obese patients who have hypertension and type 2 diabetes.8
In the SMOOTH study, ambulatory blood pressure readings taken during the last 6 hours of dosing and over a 24-hour assessment period were consistently lower with the telmisartan/HCTZ combination than with the valsartan/HCTZ preparation, an effect that was noticeably apparent during the early morning hours.8
